The Virginia Trappers Association has two fur sales every year. The association invites a wide variety of fur buyers to purchase local fur from Commonwealth trappers. Fur sales are typically held in an East location, then a West location, so all trappers have access to the sale. The sale is a family event. Children can earn money by working as couriers, shuttling fur between sellers and buyers. The fee structure is based on a commission. There is no commission fee for members of the Virginia Trappers Association.
There is a $15.00 commission fee for non-members. However, you can join the Virginia Trappers Association at the door for approximately $20.00+/- to support the association, keep trapping as an American heritage, and negate your commission fee.
Call-in registration will begin approximately 30 days in advance. When you call to pre-register, you will need to provide your name, address, and the item (s) you are selling and the quantity. (Please download the Virginia Trappers Association Fur Sale Lot Sheet.) It is best to call and preregister because you will be given a Registration Number. Registration numbers will be in the order of the sale. If you register at the door, you need to fill out approximately 10 copies (1 for buyer, (this may vary) 1 for seller, 1 for VTA records, and one or more for your records) of the Virginia Trappers Association Fur Sale Lot Sheet. After you fill out the forms, you will receive a registration number. A copy of the VTA Fur Sale Lot Sheet is also available on the Archives page.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources will be present with Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) tags for those who have not received them prior to the sale. Research CITES tag requirements before the sale here:
https://dwr.virginia.gov/hunting/regulations/furbearertrapping/
BOBCAT
Raw bobcat pelts and unskinned carcasses that are bought, sold, bartered, traded, solicited for purchase, or transported out of state must also have a CITES tag affixed to each pelt by the trapper or hunter who harvested the animal. A valid confirmation number will be needed to obtain a CITES tag. No CITES tag is needed to have a bobcat mounted by a Virginia taxidermist or to ship a bobcat pelt out-of-state for tanning purposes (unless required by the state where the tannery is located).
OTTER
Raw otter pelts and unskinned carcasses that are bought, sold, bartered, traded, solicited for purchase, or transported out of state must have a CITES tag affixed to each animal. No CITES tag is needed to have an otter mounted by a Virginia taxidermist or ship an otter pelt out-of-state for tanning purposes (unless required by the state where the tannery is located).
